o Eyes which are red at the rims.
o Mood swings.
The reasons why young people begin using drugs:
Even though the media may nor portray it in this light; most young people don’t take drugs or end up with a long term drug issue. Some of the reasons why some young people do experiment with alcohol or drugs are:
o To increase confidence
o As a form of rebellion
o For experimentation
o To fit in with peers
o To please curiosity
o To relax
o To deal with anxiety, a low mood or stress
How to talk to your child if you think they are taking drugs:
1. Begin by doing some self reading first so that you already have some knowledge and awareness related to drugs and alcohol.
2. Make sure you choose an appropriate time to talk; not after an argument.
3. Create an atmosphere where you show that you care and your child can talk to you. Do not demand that they talk to you or accuse them of things. This will only turn negative.
4. Remember this conversation can be difficult, but it is imperative that you remain calm; the calmer you are the more chance the conversation will be honest.
